How To Maintain Suns Furniture

I didn't give much thought to furniture maintenance until my new double-pedestal Suns dining table was sitting in kitchen and my family was using it every day. That's when decided I'd better find out how to keep it looking good so it will last a long time, probably longer than I last!

What I discovered is that the finish on most new Suns furniture is called "conversion varnish" and this is what I learned from the website of one manufacturer, "Clear conversion varnish is a high performance, water clear, non-yellowing catalyzed varnish, with a proven track record in industrial use for high quality cabinets, furniture and fixtures." I like the sound of that, and I also like the fact that the finish on my table is the best on the market.

Naturally, I wondered if anything else was necessary to protect my new kitchen table from all the use it gets everyday. I was surprised to learn that TV commercials and magazine ads selling furniture polish, wax and oil to maintain quality furniture are simply do not apply to conversion varnish. They are just selling products, not actual solutions to problems.

Because as it turns out, conversion varnish completely seals the wood, making polish, wax and oil unnecessary. Use of those products is a waste because they sit on the surface of the finished wood and cannot penetrate at all. Although you can get a temporary shine until the polish evaporates, and possibly a nice smell in the room from a scented product you will not get any added protection for your furniture by polishing, waxing or oiling it. The conversion varnish does it all.

Here's what you can do to make a difference in the appearance of your Suns furniture: 1) Protect with place mats and coasters to avoid scratching and moisture damage. 2) Dust with the grain not against the grain of the wood; 3) Wash gently with plain soap and water and dry immediately with a towel. 4) Mind your mama, and keep your feet off the table!

Your antique-in-the-making is protected by the conversion varnish applied in the shop of your Suns craftsman, which means you are also protected from worrying about the surface of your dining table during everyday use. Taking care to clean your table and treat it with respect all you need to do when you want to ensure that it looks good for daily use and for many years to come. Summary: The conversion varnish applied to new Suns furniture is all that's necessary to protect it. Polishing, waxing or oiling it is unnecessary, just take care to protect it from damage.
